Zara Larsson Waited a Year to Sing Stateside With PinkPantheress

Zara Larsson Waited a Year to Sing Stateside With PinkPantheress

PinkPantheress, whose surprise walk-on during Zara Larsson's set gave Stateside its first live outing.

There is a particular kind of pop frustration that only exists in the streaming era: a song two artists made together, that millions of people know by heart, that the two of them have somehow never sung in the same room. “Stateside” had been in that category for nearly a year.

On Saturday night at All Points East in London, that ended. Midway through Zara Larsson’s set, PinkPantheress walked out unannounced, and the pair finally performed their remix together in front of a festival crowd that reacted the way you would expect.

“You Guys Are Watching Herstory Being Made”

Larsson did not undersell the moment. “You guys are watching herstory being made right now,” she told the crowd, as reported by Pitchfork, and for once the festival hyperbole was close to accurate.

What makes it strange is that these two are not strangers on a stage. They had performed together before. They had simply never performed this particular song together, despite it being the reason a good chunk of the audience knew both names in the same sentence.

Clips of the guest spot spread across social platforms within hours, most of them shot from the crowd, most of them capturing the same thing: the moment the audience worked out who had just walked on.

All Points East runs as a multi-weekend series in Victoria Park rather than a single festival day, which means a London crowd on any given night is drawn by one headliner rather than a whole camping ticket. Larsson had the room to herself, and the walk-on landed on people who had specifically chosen to be there for her. That is a different reaction from a wandering afternoon crowd stumbling onto a surprise.

The Song That Got Everywhere Except a Stage

“Stateside” is a standout from PinkPantheress’s Fancy Some More?, and the remix with Larsson arrived roughly a year ago. It performed exactly as a well-built pop crossover should, charting widely and settling into the kind of ubiquity that no longer requires a video or a tour to sustain it.

Its strangest afterlife came in February, when the American figure skater Alysa Liu used it for her routine at the Olympic exhibition gala. A pop remix reaching an Olympic ice rink before it reaches a shared microphone is a neat summary of how songs travel now. Placement, playlists and short-form video do the work; the live performance is optional, and often arrives last.

For fans, that gap is exactly what made Saturday land. The song was not new. The pairing was not new. The only thing missing had been the two of them, at once, singing it.

It also explains why the clips did numbers that a straightforward festival performance never would. Nothing about the audio was novel; anyone in the crowd could have played the studio version on the way in. What was novel was the staging, and social platforms reward a visible first far more reliably than they reward a good performance of something familiar.

They Had Already Done This in Reverse

The two singers have been circling a proper joint moment for months. At Coachella in April, the roles were flipped: PinkPantheress was the one on stage, and she brought Larsson out to debut their rework of “Midnight Sun,” Larsson’s runaway hit from the previous year.

That version landed on Midnight Sun (Girls Trip), the remix album Larsson released in April with a guest list that reads like a deliberate cross-generational statement, Robyn and Shakira among them. So within a single year the two have remixed each other’s songs in both directions and debuted one of those remixes at the biggest festival in America.

Doing the other one in London, in front of a home crowd for PinkPantheress, has a tidy symmetry to it.

It also says something about how the two are managing their overlap. Neither remix was positioned as a headline single with its own campaign. Both arrived as additions to an existing project, which kept the collaboration flexible and let each artist keep her own release schedule intact. The trade-off is that a song built that way has no obvious moment where a joint performance is scheduled, which is precisely how a hit ends up a year old before anyone sings it together.

Why PinkPantheress Is Having This Kind of Year

The guest spot arrives in the middle of an unusually broad run for her. In February she won Producer of the Year at the BRITs, the youngest artist and the first woman ever to take it, which reframed how the industry talks about her: not as a vocalist with a distinctive sound, but as the person actually building the records.

She has also lined up an acting debut in the next film from the Daniels, and put out a pointedly British video for “Girl Like Me,” from Fancy That. Producer, performer, actor, internet native: the portfolio is wide enough that a surprise festival walk-on barely registers as the biggest thing she has done this year.

That breadth is the reason a two-minute cameo travelled as far as it did. When an artist is credible in several rooms at once, a small moment in one of them gets amplified by everyone watching the others.

Larsson’s Tour Is Not Finished Yet

Larsson, meanwhile, is deep into a global run behind Midnight Sun, and All Points East was one stop rather than a finale. She takes the tour to festival season’s next wave shortly, with the New York and Maryland editions of All Things Go booked for next month.

That matters for anyone hoping this becomes a habit. Both artists are actively touring, both are in the same festival ecosystem, and the song now has a proven live arrangement. The barrier that kept “Stateside” off stages for a year was scheduling, not chemistry.

Whether it happens again depends on the calendar. Guest spots like this are rarely planned far ahead; they happen when two routings brush against each other and someone in a manager’s group chat notices.

There is a commercial argument for making it deliberate. A remix that has already proved it can chart, soundtrack a televised Olympic routine and pull a festival reaction is a rare asset, and the live version is the only part of it not yet monetised. A short run of joint appearances would cost neither artist a release cycle.

What This Says About Pop Right Now

The wider pattern is worth naming. Collaborations increasingly exist as files rather than events. Two artists can build a hit remotely, watch it chart, watch it soundtrack an Olympic broadcast, and never share a stage, because nothing in the modern release cycle forces them to.

That makes the live version scarce, and scarcity is precisely why a crowd loses its mind when it finally happens. It is the same logic driving the chart moments that keep pop’s biggest songs climbing weeks after release: the audience decides when something peaks, and the artists respond.

PinkPantheress and Larsson did not release anything on Saturday. They performed something a year old. It was still the most shared pop clip of the weekend, which tells you how much value is now sitting in the one thing streaming cannot replicate.
